Three Parts to Go: Into the Woods

“Jacob, did you hear that?” Trevor’s eyes were wide as he shook with fear.  He had just heard the sound of sticks that broke in the distance, and his mind couldn't stop thinking about the worst. It didn’t help that Trevor and Jacob were alone in the woods, the sun only gave a glimpse of light as it descended.

“Yes, lets try to ignore what we heard and keep moving," Jacob was Trevor’s big brother and when he noticed Trevor’s fearful eyes he knew what he had to do which was to stay calm for his sake.

Trevor stopped to listen in on the woods “we better hurry back, it’s starting to get dark and I really don’t want to be stuck out here.” As he stood in one place the woods around him grew more dark, his imagination ran faster with every possible fear he had stored away. “We don’t even know this path” he said as Jacob pushed him along.

“We won’t get anywhere if you continue to stand around”

“I told you we should’ve taken a different path, like the one we are familiar with. We don’t know what’s out here! There could be bears, fox, mountain lions, who knows!” Trevor began to hyperventilate with fear and panic at the thought of those animals and being stuck outside in the middle of the forest.

“Trevor, you need to calm down. Stop worrying about those things, you’ll only make it worse on yourself. Besides I know where I am.” Jacob hesitated as he spoke as if he wasn’t really confident in his words, Trevor knew it but appreciated the effort in trying to make him feel better. The sun had completely disappeared, the only light the two brothers had was from the reflections of the moon, stars and their almost dead flashlights.  They continued to walk aimlessly and fearfully until Jacob couldn’t take it anymore. “Okay, I’m lost Trevor.” Jacob whispered in defeat.

Trevor cursed under his breath “I knew we’d get stuck out here.”

“This isn’t my fault!” Jacob defended himself towards Trevor “maybe if you hadn’t dropped the map or if you had realized it was gone sooner we would be in the predicament.”

Trevor stopped in his footsteps, and ignored what Jacob was accusing “Shit man, what’s that?” He points to a faint light that was in front of them.

“I don’t know, but let’s go check it out” without being discussed any further Jacob lead the way towards the dim light in the distance. They walked in silence as they crept closer. To their luck it was an informative center, but it was one of the parks older ones. The paint on the side of the cabin was peeling, the windows were smashed, and the floors were broken in spots.

“Jacob, let’s get out of here. I’m getting weird vibes from this place, it is really dark and creepy. It seems like a place cults would gather and draw those weird triangles on the floor with blood” Trevor shakes at the thought.

“Shut up. We’re already tweaking, and you are making this worse”

“I’m sorry… I’m just telling you how I’m feeling. Please don’t tell me you want go in there?” Trevor expressed his concern.

“No but look, here’s a map of the park” on the outside of the cabin a map is nailed down. “We’re here” Jacob points to the red arrow indicating where they are.

“Oh hell no, we still got a mile to the parking lot” Trevor said exhausted.

“let’s just go and check it out” Jacob said suddenly referring to the cabin.

As they snuck around the inside of the cabin Trevor noticed strange writing on the wall, in red ink. “Hey, you see this? Do you know what any of this says? I told you this place was sketchy!’ Trevor said in confusion.

“Do you really think I’m going to understand it? Dude, you’re dumb”, Jacob laughed at Trevors stupid questions. Then all of a sudden, a dark figure had passed between the trees outside of the cabin and Jacob stopped with his comedic laugh. “Did you see that? I swear, I just saw a dark figure outside of this cabin. You were right this place is too much”, Jacob said frozen in place. Then a small creaking sound came from the floor boards above them. “Did you hear that? It sounded like someone is walking around upstairs.” Jacob whispered to Trevor pointing to the ceiling above him.

“We need to figure out how to get out of there. We heard too much shit earlier and now you are seeing things outside of the cabin and hearing more noises in the cabin. Hell, there’s probably candles surrounding bloody triangles on the floor in another room.  We should’ve just kept walking. Now we probably pissed off the ghost by coming in here. What if it like follows us home and haunts us forever?” Trevor said somewhat as a joke.

“The map said it was a straight shot back to the parking lot. Let’s just quickly get back to the car. Don’t leave me though, I’m getting really scared. We’ll run out of here as fast as possible.” Jacob told Trevor.

The brothers began to feel the adrenaline run through their body. With that they almost simultaneously started to run back to the parking lot. They heard foot steps behind and twigs breaking behind them and they could’t distinguish if they had made the noises or not. “Dude, run faster! I hear footstep behind us.” Jacob panted as he warned Trevor.

Out of breathe Trevor panicked “sweat is running down my face into my eyes. It burns dude.”

As soon as they reached the parking lot Jacob began fumbling with his car keys, it wasn’t until they were locked in the safety of the car that they both looked out the rear view mirror. They had noticed a black figure, at least eight feet tall, standing at the edge of the parking lot where the woods cut off as if the figure couldn’t move any further.

“Bro look at the edge of the woods. Do you see that?” Trevor asked in fear.

Jacob whipped the car out of the parking lot, they drove for ten miles in silence constantly looked up to check the rear view mirror, to make sure there was nothing following them anymore.

“It followed us all the way out of the woods.” Jacob trembled in disbelief as he sat in the drivers seat, “What if it had caught up to us?”

“Did you see how tall that thing was? He could have if he wanted too, he was probably chasing us to make us leave. Still I know one thing we are never coming back here! Can you sleep in my room? To be honest, I’m kind of scared and don’t want to be alone.” Trevor said as a vehicle in front of them blinded the brothers with it's headlights.
