Practice in Description
Part one: re-write a generic description.
I stare at myself in the mirror, my shaggy blonde hair covers my eyes before I slick it back with hair gel. The bathroom is steamy because I forgot to turn on the fan as I showered. I quickly get dressed in my dark blue dress suit that is a little loose around the waist but nothing a nice belt can’t fix. I continue to look at myself in the mirror again “I am John Smith” I speak confidently looking at myself. What a simple name, but I suppose it works for the weird character they want me to portray. I head out the door before I’m late for work. Once I arrive on set I get out of my car and I have someone else park it for me.
“Hey Robert!” My director calls out to me “ready for the big shoot today John smith” he winks as he says my character names.
“Ready as all always be” I get into character ready to preform. John Smith my character begins the scene walking down the streets. I’m told that John has a slight limped bounce to his step. He’s a jolly man but nobody likes him, John waves at every person he walks by but they only stare at him like he is dumb. My character notices their stares and begins to fumble with his hands expressing his feelings with a crumbled up nose and wrinkle on his face. If a normal person did this in public they would be crazy. Thankfully John is only a fictional character one I get paid big bucks to act out.
Part two: Don't stop writing
I’m wearing a long wine red dress that touches the floor. The dress has flowers uniquely embroiled into it, I can’t believe I thrifted something so beautiful for only five dollars. My hair is in a thick black braid that touches the middle of my back, I place little white flowers in the creases of my braid to add more character to my hair. I throw my black heavy duty jacket on and zip it up. We had the first snow storm of the year a few days ago and I’m not set out for this cold weather yet. My brown boots zip up to my ankles and I’m ready to head out the door with my keys in my hands. My car of course is freezing and I soon realize my regret of not buying a vehicle with remote start on it. I shiver in my seat as it begins to warm up my back. I twist and tune the radio to the station I prefer to listen to then back out of my driveway.
