Suspense Matters

Amy and I pull up to the nearest parking spot at the gas station, at this point the sun has set and the sky is dark. I check the clock as I’m stepping out of my vehicle and notice it's nearing 8pm.

“I wish we would have came out here earlier. I don’t like going into gas station late, its so sketchy” Amy groans stepping out of my car simultaneously as me.

“Stop begin so dramatic” I laugh “Let’s go get some snacks then dip.” I grab her hand and drag her behind me. The gas station is empty beside the store clerk who sits behind the registers reading the paper. He doesn’t look up as he greet us coming through the doors. Amy and I walk to the chips aisle, she grabs two bags of Doritos and I grab the cheese dip for them. “Did you want something to drink?” I ask walking over to the fridges.

“I mean if you are offering” she laughs and grabs herself a Monster.

“Guess we aren’t going to bed anytime soon.” I say grabbing a monster as well. We both hear the chime that comes from the front doors of the stores alerting that another costumer has walked through. “Got everything?” Amy nods so we begin walking to the front of the store when we hear a bunch of ruckus going on so we stop and just peer our heads around the corner but out of sight.

A Tall mad wearing all black with his hood up start yelling at the store clerk, his voice is rapid and I can barley understand him but the look of fear and concern on the store clerks face tells it all. This man is trying to steal from him and we are in the background hiding. I put my pointer finger over my lips and look at my friend signaling to be quiet. She backs away but trips and falls making a loud crash which causes the man in the black hoodie to turn around and faces her, I’m hidden from his view but he definitely sees her. She goes pale as she stares back at him. That’s when everything happens so fast, he pulls out his pistol and shoots Amy then turns around and shoots the man behind the register in the face. He runs around steals all the money he can obtain in the register than rushes out. My fear causes my to be still unable to look at Amy as she cries out in pain. Finally working up the courage I turn and look to see that she has only been shot in the leg. The blood gushing out of her makes me want to go limp at the fear of it, but I know what I have to do since I’m the only one who can help her. I take off my jacket and wrap it around her thigh holding pressure onto her wound until the police show up to take her away in the ambulance. The store clerk was shot in the head so there is no point in trying to revive him. The EMT assures me that it was a good thing I was there to hold pressure onto her wound otherwise they could have dragged two dead bodies out of that gas station that night.
